  • Police are staging a family fun day to build closer link with the community of Cotmanhay.  Part of Safer Neighbourhood Week, a number of events will take place, including the fun day to be staged at Cotmanhay Pavilion, Pavilion Road, on June 21st from 10:30am to 3:00pm.  Attractions will include a bouncy castle, football competitions, a clown and a gladiator style competition.  Also in attendance will be a temporary tattoo studio where you can get a Safer Neighbourhood tattoo and there will also be a display from the road policing unit, as well as information from partner agencies offering advice on safety including representation from the Erewash Community Safety Team.  For more details, visit www.derbyshire.police.uk.

  • Alcohol-related violence and anti-social behaviour are two of the key problems local police officers are handling every day. A large number of incidents occur as a result of people drinking on the streets.  The Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Management Group (CNMG) this week presented local police, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and Cotmanhay Rangers with a grant of £3,700 to help them purchase a range of tools to tackle those who are drinking on the streets. It is hoped this support will help reduce the anti-social behaviour and violence some residents of the area are subjected to.

The money has helped to provide 300 Citizen Cards – these are Government-backed proof of age cards(the only approved form of photo identification other than driving licenses), 500 alcohol test strips. These are used to test drinks in unmarked containers which the police suspect may be alcohol, three digital breathalysers; and three digital cameras to record criminal damage, graffiti and domestic violence incidents.

It is hoped the use of this equipment will lead to: less visible on-street drinking, help to curb illegal alcohol sales, provider greater reassurance to the residents of Cotmanhay, reduce levels of criminal damage and antisocial behaviour, allow licensees to verify the ages of persons trying to buy alcohol by providing citizen cards, and greater awareness of alcohol and substance misuse within the community.

  • Cotmanhay’s Enterprise Centre is celebrating its tenth anniversary.  The facility has provided opportunities for thousands of local people since it was first opened and currently has 500 enrolled students studying basic courses in reading, writing and arithmetic as well as fitness subjects.  An open day was held recently at the centre, run by the site’s management – the Erewash Partnership – which works to boost the local economy in what is one of the country’s most deprived areas.

  • A borough regeneration agency has been awarded £115,000 in funding to help people into work.  The Erewash Partnership will receive over £93,000 from Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Management Group to run the courses until March 2009, which aim to deliver skills to the people of Cotmanhay - one of the most deprived in England for employment, skills and health.  A further £21,000 from the Learning and Skills Council will be used to offer similar courses in areas including Ilkeston, Kirk Hallam, Long Eaton, Sandiacre and Sawley.

  • Community groups and voluntary organisations in Cotmanhay and Ilkeston North could benefit from a share of £200,000 on offer for those groups supporting and offering services to the people of the area.  The Cotmanhay Neighbourhood Management Group (CNMG) is inviting those who have a service or scheme that will be of benefit to the local community to apply for a share of the group’s 2007 funding pot of £200,000.  The funding can be used for any project that has a beneficial effect on the residents and services provided in the area.

Anne Chisholm, Neighbourhood Manager, said: “Since we opened this funding round we have received a large number of applications, but we are particularly keen to support bids from community and voluntary organisations working in the local area. Our project is led by the residents and community of Cotmanhay and we want to ensure that everyone who has a relevant service or initiative, is taking advantage of this opportunity for extra funding.”

Since 2006 CNMG has supported over 30 projects in Cotmanhay, including residents groups, schools, environmental projects and crime prevention.  If you would like to apply for a share of this funding please contact the CNMG team at the Cotmanhay Enterprise Centre, on 0115 944 2073 or email dawn.watts(at)erewash.gov.uk
