  • An Ockbrook man is embarking on a weight loss campaign to raise money for the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit and aims to raise £8,000 along with a friend from Allestree.  Lyndsay Morgan, of The Settlement, is the chairman of Ockbrook & Borrowash Cricket Club.  Along with fellow cricket fan David Ball, they aim to raise £2,400 each in memory of Mr. Morgan's late wife Bev, who was treated at the hospital, but died from lung cancer aged 49 in November last year.  Weighing more than 44 stone between them, David and Lyndsay have enrolled at Weightwatchers and aim to reach their target weight by September 2008.  They are seeking the equivalent of £100 per pound shed.  For a sponsorship form or to donate, call Mr. Ball on Derby 01332 558971.

  • A selection of Erewash pubs have been listed in the 2008 Good Beer Guide.  The book, which was first published in 1974, is the only guide which is annually reviewed by members of the Campaign for Real Ale, who visit local hostelries to sample the quality of ale on offer.  Erewash pubs which are credited are Ilkeston pubs the Dewdrop, Ilford and Needlemakers, Long Eaton’s Hole In The Wall and the Royal Oak are listed, as is the Royal Oak in Ockbrook, the Harrington Arms in Sawley and the White Post Inn in Stanley Common.

  • Sixteen people have already joined Ockbrook & Borrowash First Responders Group after a call for volunteers.  Organised by the Church Wilne Rotary Club and trained by the East Midlands Ambulance Service, volunteers are equipped with and trained on the use of essential medical equipment to be able to respond early to localised calls for help before paramedics arrive.  To set up the new group, the Rotary Club will raise funds for the kit required.  For more information, contact Colin Orrick on Derby 666865 or call Derbyshire St. John Ambulance on 0845 1304 999.
