  • A scheme to make vital medical information readily available in the event of an emergency is taking off in Erewash, thanks to funding support from Erewash Borough Council.  The ‘Message in a Bottle’ scheme, which has been organised in Erewash by the Long Eaton Lions Club, helps individuals who feel most vulnerable to have necessary medical evidence inside a special bottle in their home, such as:repeat prescriptions; contact details of carers and/or family members; information about any pets that need looking after if you get taken into hospital; and; information on any known allergies.

The scheme also provides the individual with a sticker for their window to show the emergency services that they have a ‘Message in a Bottle’.  The details in the bottle could be of real assistance to the emergency services as they attempt to assess the medical situation quickly and accurately.   Residents in Breaston, Draycott, Long Eaton, Risley and Sawley, will benefit from this scheme thanks to the Long Eaton Lions Club, who obtained part of their funding from Erewash Borough Council. The funding of £750 was awarded through the Community and Voluntary Fund.

Long Eaton Lions Club launched ‘Message in a Bottle’ on 2 October at Sawley Community Hall, from 6.30pm. Councillor Carol Hart, Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Community Services, said: “This scheme could be a real comfort to those who live alone and may find themselves in need of assistance from the emergency services one day.  It will also make the job of those medical professionals treating patients that bit easier, as they will have a basic knowledge about a person’s condition and will be able to make decisions about their immediate care based on this evidence.”

  • Residents in Long Eaton and Sawley have been told they need to be on flood alert – but reassured that preventative action is being taken.  The locality has largely escaped summer’s horrendous flooding that hit particularly hard in both Yorkshire and Gloucestershire.  But a look at the sea of blue on the Environment Agency’s flood maps for both Long Eaton and Sawley reveals that we are at risk of a repeat of the famous floods of 1947 that affected 2,000 houses in Long Eaton

Official risk figures range from one in every 75 years in Long Eaton to a slightly higher risk in areas of Sawley.  But, as the Environment Agency takes its own action to reduce the risk, a spokesperson said residents should not act as sitting ducks, but prepare sensibly for any future flooding.  The Environment Agency has plans to build a trial flood embankment will raise approximately 50 metres of the existing embankment by half a metre, and widen it by 4 metres towards Wilne Road.  This will provide standards of flood protection to over 16,000 homes and businesses in Nottingham

  • Long Eaton and Sawley people are being urged to help raise £200,000 to help a church which is falling into disrepair.  In 1997, the congregation of All Saints’ Church in Sawley collected £15,000 to repair the spire, but stonework on the tower of the Grade 1 listed building needs restoring and the roof needs replacing.  Church staff are seeking all forms of funding, but are concerned about stonework which needs urgent work to stop the structure becoming unsafe.  The church dates back to the 13th century and has a congregation of over 130 people.

  • A selection of Erewash pubs have been listed in the 2008 Good Beer Guide.  The book, which was first published in 1974, is the only guide which is annually reviewed by members of the Campaign for Real Ale, who visit local hostelries to sample the quality of ale on offer.  Erewash pubs which are credited are Ilkeston pubs the Dewdrop, Ilford and Needlemakers, Long Eaton’s Hole In The Wall and the Royal Oak are listed, as is the Royal Oak in Ockbrook, the Harrington Arms in Sawley and the White Post Inn in Stanley Common.

  • Residents of the Long Eaton area who are struggling with issues such as debt and bankruptcy are to be helped after a local charity extended coverage into the area.  Citizens Advice Bureau, based in South Street, Ilkeston, has now opened an outreach office at Dovedale Primary School, Dovedale Avenue in New Sawley, open between 9:30am and 12:00noon on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesday of each month.  The branch costs £100,000 a year to operate, funded by the Borough Council, the County Council and the Big Lottery Fund.  One member of staff will operate at the New Sawley office, with appointments necessary to obtain advice  For more information, or to enquire about volunteering, contact 0870 121 2028.
