Paul Pounder
Paul
was born on 17th March 1976 – in Nottingham – his place of birth
still haunts him to this day. Second child to parents Sue and Phil, he has
a brother called Scott. He didn’t
have a choice where he was born, and moved to Derby in 2002 to be closer to the
radio group operations of the time.
Paul grew up in Sawley, and attended Sawley Infants and Juniors before moving on to Long Eaton Community School where he took his GCSEs and A-Levels.
Paul went into radio a lot later in his life than his radio group colleagues. Wanting to get into Video Editing he decided to take an evening class in HNC Media Studies at South East Derbyshire College. The syllabus included video editing and also setting up and running short-term radio station - Cavendish FM.
In his first year at the college Paul become the Head of News, writing and editing the stories for his fellow students to read out on the hour, every hour. Towards the end of the broadcast he went on to read the news out on air, only to be sellotaped up by the Breakfast Crew live on air on his final news bulletin.
By this time, Paul had got to know a fellow student called Sam Hudd, and the following year, they presented the Drivetime Show together. At this point Sam was part of Derby’s PRIDE-FM, and he suggested that Paul should come along and join in.
So in 1997, Paul presented his first show on the station. The Sunday Morning show, which regailed in stories of using Hedgehogs as Pineapple and Party sausage dispensers at parties, and elements including the amusingly titled Farmyard Top Ten.
Paul continued as a member of the radio group, and in 1999 was asked to join the committee. He also took over the responsibility of owning and producing the station website. When committee became management team, Paul became the Finance Director watching over the station incomings and outgoings.
Paul was responsible for the design and management of websites for PRIDE-FM and Erewash Sound, as Head of IT, and can be found presenting the wacky and totally hilarious Rhythm of the Night show alongside Sam Hudd, weekdays on Erewash Sound.
In his working life Paul works at an International Credit Card company, working in the Training Department, building and maintaining on-line support tools and training. In his social life, Paul is a massive Derby County fan. A season ticket holder at Pride Park Stadium and also watches the team away from home when he can. Paul has only ever missed two matches at Pride Park Stadium, one whilst on holiday and the other match which will always hold a special memory. Paul was invited by Sky Sports to commentate on Derby County vs West Ham United on Fanzone, an experience he'll never forget. Unfortunately the match was a 0-0 draw, but he will always tell people that on the 81st minute he said 'chocolate digestive biskwit' on national TV. If you don't believe him, ask him to have the video ready.
